The Sazerac is one of the oldest known cocktails[1], with its origins in pre-Civil War New Orleans, Louisiana. The original drink is based on a combination of Cognac and bitters created by John D Gertsen in the 1830s, and is reported to be the first cocktail ever invented in America.[2] Since its creation, many different recipes have evolved for the drink, usually involving some combination of Cognac, rye whiskey, absinthe or Herbsaint and Peychaud's Bitters.
Current recipe served at the Eberly Mansion:
One double Old Fashion glass
3 ice cubes Cover cubes with Sazerac Rye Whiskey
3 dashes of Angostra Bitters
Finish with Ginger Ale
I hate absinthe and I don't keep simple sugar in the house. This is an excellent match to a Rocky Patel Edge Maduro

Rye... Last summer I discovered Sazerac Rye whiskey. It's actually a nice, sweet tasting whiskey, easier to take versus a corn whiskey. Good smokey flavor also, as you mentioned, so it's great with a cigar.
Tough to find. Surdyks is the only place with any variety, and I think they only have 3 or 4 brands.
