Either Lady L. or Margaret recommended MAD MEN, and now I’m an addicted. It's like a sophisticated soap opera- only the acting doesn't suck. Two common award winning themes seem to be, the reality behind the idea of the American Dream & gender role issues. I feel the Oscar nominated movie, Revolutionary Road echoed MAD MEN to a Tee. MAD MEN has won their share of emmys, as well.
The shows popularity can be attributed to the clever writing and the appeal to both sexes. Women can imagine themselves in the beautiful vintage fashions. The issues and conflicts, which the complex female characters face, are still relevant. As a woman, watching Mad Men's painted version "Male dominated world," doesn't offend me. Instead, it instills an appreciation for the freedom and power women have gained since. And guys can live vicariously through the male characters; who wouldn't want a wife who looks like Betty Draper, an agreeable mistress like Joan Holloway, (who knows her place), or someone to "manage peoples expectations," for them?
