Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the longest-serving senator in American history, died Monday at the age of 92, a spokesman for the family said.

Byrd, a Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate since 1959, had been plagued by health problems in recent years and was confined to a wheelchair. He had skipped several votes in Congress in the past months.

Jesse Jacobs, a family spokesman, said Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

He was the oldest member of the 111th Congress.

The passing of Sen. Byrd will not affect the balance of power in the Senate. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, a Democrat, will appoint a replacement senator to serve out the remainder of Byrd’s term which ends in 2012.

He's seen plenty of white nig**rs in his time.

Although, I suspect he'll see things in more of a reddish hue where he's going. Lots of fire and what not. His klansman hood won't do him much good down there...

I hope he wasn't too uspet when he found out Jesus had a fairly dark complexion.

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

I appreciate it when someone on the left can admit that "Sheets Byrd" was not a model citizen or saint.

His continual pork barreling has done extensive damage to the economy of his state. When the government funnels money into a state, it has a negative effect on the local economy as it pushes out sustainable local businesses.

Sen. Byrd, like many of his generation, came late to the equality table, but he was there. RIP. He was the king of pork for W Va. Every thing in W Va is named after him.

I have nothing nice to say about Byrd.

There are some things that should forever disqualify one from public office.
No mater how many "come to Jesus" moments are claimed; some shit is just beyond the pale.
Being a high ranking leader of the KKK is one such disqualifier.
That the democrats embraced this guy, and the Times and other media heavyweights manage to give him not just a pass, but to hold the guy up as some kind of heroic figure is disgusting.

Horse-poop!
It may have been politically expedient to pretend to be on the "equality bandwagon", but he was still calling people ni**er right up to the end.

A liberal friend and I were having lunch today and talking about Sen. Byrd. We came up with the following observations:

He was first elected to Congress at age 35 - in 1952, wich means he was in office before the Civil Rights movement. He was in office when Hawaii wasn't a state yet. That's some amazing stuff - He was in office for so long...then we joked that his grandchildren probably remember the first man on the moon and JFK's assassination. And that his children were old enough to call all the Woodstock attendees damn dirty hippies. Joking of course, but you get the point...

And we BOTH agree that this man is the poster boy for term limits. My pal brought up the fact that NO ONE should be in elected office for that long. He's a firm believer in a 2 term limit for Senators. Had there been term limits on this gentleman, he'd have wrapped up his political career back in the 70's...

He may have been faking it, that anti-bigotry stuff OR he may have seen the light, I don't know. He had Black staff people. He was the poster child for term limits for sure.

He spoke out against McCain-Fiengold as anti first amendment, I'll give him credit for that.

Byrd was an old-school shit weasel. Knew how to do the hurdy-gurdy dance for the cameras, reformed my ass. The country is a better place with his passing. Defend this guy in any way and you defend the cracker-ass puppet show of saying one thing while doing another.

As i'm sure Harlan can attest, The Klan in the south today is little more than a Masonic lodge, Elks club deal. Yeah they think Blacks should ride in the back of the bus, but they don't wish them harm.

Good example of what happens when you ask Kermit for math help.

He didn't publicly and privately support Obama for prez? Got any evidence of that beyond what the voices in your head say?

Check your math, Opus. If there were a two term limit for the THE SENATE...after all, he was elected to the house in 1952, served for 6 yrs. then was elected to the senate. Now, two terms there would have put him where??? Oh yeah, in the 70's. if you read everything you commented on at all, instead of trying to call someone stupid every fucking time you commented, you'd also see that the conversation I had with my friend stated he felt there shoudl be a two term limit for SENATORS. Not the house. Go back and lay by your dish now, numbskull.

Byrd was a parting gift from Jim Crow. Recall his filibustering opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Seventeen southern Democrats joined Byrd in filibustering the Senate bill. It always amazed me that he could be absorbed by the progressives that took over the party in the late 60s. It also was odd that Strom Thermond was hung out to dry for the same behaviors that were acceptable in Byrd.

True, Nobody. The klan has gone through an extensive 're-branding' effort over the last couple-three decades, community boosterism and all that happy shiny stuff, but at the end of the day it's still the KKK.

Yup. I had a college educated friend when I lived in Charlotte, when I asked him why he was a Klan member, told me "well, my Daddy was too". His klavern was a patron of a section of hiway 16 in NC. Go figure. And yeah it's still the KKK.
