Robert Byrd had a "fleeting association with the Klan" says Pres. Bill Clinton

Did President Clinton, while eulogizing Robert Byrd, really just say that Byrd had a "fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan"?  Seriously?  The man that actually said the following (in a letter to the Grand Wizard) only had a "fleeting association"?

The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation.

The same man that said the following had only a "fleeting association"?

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than  to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.

He seems pretty well dug in to me.  Apparently Byrd isn't the only one with fleeting associations.  Bill appears to have a fleeting association with the facts..and the truth.   And of course his zipper, but that's for another time.
But maybe this is a case of Bill not having anything nice to say about the dead senator, so he had to make it up.  Oh but, Byrd was only involved in order to get elected!  Ah, well then it's ok, right?  Sheesh, somewhere in hell, Robert Byrd is yelling "GET OFF MY SIDE!" at Bill today.

At this rate, Pres. Clinton will be competing with Slow Joe Biden for the "Saying the most stupid thing" award for the week.
