Public Announcement -Mad Men is Back!

Either Lady L. or Margaret recommended MAD MEN, and now I’m an addicted. It's like a sophisticated soap opera- only the acting doesn't suck. Two common award winning themes seem to be, the reality behind the idea of the American Dream & gender role issues. I feel the Oscar nominated movie, Revolutionary Road echoed MAD MEN to a Tee. MAD MEN has won their share of emmys, as well.
The shows popularity can be attributed to the clever writing and the appeal to both sexes. Women can imagine themselves in the beautiful vintage fashions. The issues and conflicts, which the complex female characters face, are still relevant. As a woman, watching Mad Men's painted version "Male dominated world," doesn't offend me. Instead, it instills an appreciation for the freedom and power women have gained since. And guys can live vicariously through the male characters; who wouldn't want a wife who looks like Betty Draper, an agreeable mistress like Joan Holloway, (who knows her place), or someone to "manage peoples expectations," for them?
Set in the 1960's @ the NYC, advertising firm of Sterling and Cooper. A classic boys club where all the secretaries are hot, and if not- put away in the closeted switch board room. A workplace where chauvinisms, cigarettes and cocktails go unchecked- as long as you're bringing in the money. Ironically, 7 out of 9 writers of Mad Men are women. Who penned brilliant sexist, racist, lines such as:
Don Draper to Rachel Menken:
“What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell nylons.”
Ken Cosgrove commenting to the other Ad guys re: Peggy's appearance:
"They call a girl like her a lobster. All the meat's in the tail."
Fred Rumsen (shocked by Peg’s intellect & job presentation )in regards to Peggy :
“It was like watching a dog play the piano.”
Dr. Emerson when Rx’ing birthcontroll pills to Peggy:
“Don’t think you have to go out and become the town pump just to get your money’s worth.”
Ken Cosgrove (about Peggy’s weight gain):
“It’s a tragedy—piece of fruit that went real bad, real fast, and no one ever got to eat it.”
Pete Campbell: “Who put the Chinaman in my office?”
Peggy Olson (amused @ the office prank): “They paid an Oriental family to be in Mr. Campbell’s office.”
Don Draper : “Someone will finally be working in there.”
Watching MAD MEN is a nostalgic trip back into time. A time, when it was ok to have a little cush around your frame. And all the women seemed to be built, regularly donning cocktail dresses, guarder belts and lingerie nighties. (The image of Joan Holloway image is now simmering in your head... simmering in your head.) One could down a few real drinks over the lunch hour and not get fired. When commies were the enemy and American made products dominated the market. Before we were dominated by political correctness; when an off color joke was "just" a joke.
The show incorporates true historical events, such as the Kennedy vrs. Nixon debates and the Cuban Missle Crisis. Sometimes I even have to look up a popcultural reference, in order to fully comprehend a Mad Men comment or joke. Impressively, the shows sets, props, and wardrobe are almost authentically flawless. I see the Draper's home decore and it takes me back to my Grandparent's house. Mad Men's ability let me experience a time before I was born, is what I like best.
*Note important disclaimer: DO NOT try and quit smoking and or drinking while viewing the series. Why? 'Cause each episode is one long hour of non-stop subliminal messages. It is about advertisement after all. If you took a drag and drink on par with every character, --by the end of the show you may be drunk, tempted to slap someone’s ass for sport, or nag your wife about why she isn’t wearing lingerie to bed.
But, if you do fancy a smoke, strong drink, and witty sexual harassment, this Sunday's premier the perfect excuse!
For FUN, do take the "which Mad Men are you Quiz?," and post your results. What are your opinions on the premiere?

I haven't even caught up with season 2 yet. I guess I'll have to get the DVD's and watch them this weekend.
I would be very supportive of some Mad Men posts, especially ones that explore the gender issues, the smoking, the drinking and the role of advertising in America.
Of course, keeping current means I have to figure out how to hook up the new Tivo HD that has sitting on my dining room table for the last 2 weeks.

A little disappointing; not as good as the previous two seasons. However, it was interesting to see the interactions between the Americans and the British businessmen who purchased the agency. I was suprised to see Mr. Cooper have a drink, but I assume that's a clue as to how he is coping with the British invasion.
