Paul Rolly: Constitutional Scholar?

OK - I know it has been a long time since the western bureau has checked in.  That is because the liberals at the Salt Lake Tribune have been quietly biding their time...waiting for conventions and primaries to get over and the general election cycle to start.  Well start it has for the Trib's resident Constitutional Scholar has now chimed in on the whole "birther" debate...

To all you birthers who will not accept President Barack Obama’s birth certificate placed online, or the Hawaii health officials and governor who all have confirmed the president was born in Hawaii and not Kenya, if you happen to be a Republican, you have a legislative candidate this year who subjugated his U.S. citizenship a decade ago to become a German.

Shawn Bradley, the former NBA star who grew up in Castle Dale and played for BYU, was born in 1972 in Germany while his father served in the U.S. military there.

When Journalists Attack

In light of the Mick's eh the New Boss's dictates, we now resume ragging on the Strib - or it's Western cousin.....

Glen Warchol is continuing his long running attack on Rep. Jason Chaffetz in Saturday's Salt Lake Tribune.  His latest salvo came on Saturday with this hit piece.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz may be getting big tea-party pats on the back for a refusing to indulge in earmarks, but pragmatists Sens. Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett and Congressman Bob Bishop, all Republicans, say the only way to save one of the state's biggest economic engines, rocket booster builder ATK Systems, will be through earmarks.

The Blame Game

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

That quote by Founding Father Benjamin Franklin is about as prescient as any I have seen recently in light of the Islamists attacks in light of 9/11.

Today's Minneapolis Star Tribune Editorial board appears to fall into the "they that would give up essential liberty" crowd based on their latest hyperventilation.

In post-9/11 America, federal officials assured us, the most modern screening technology would be used to prevent terrorists from boarding airplanes with the intent to murder. Body-scanning machines that allow airport security personnel to detect hidden weapons or explosives under clothing were thought to be an important part of the solution.

Yet Another Benefit Of Energy Effecient Lighting

If it was not so serious (and costly) it would be funny.

Cities around the country that have installed energy-efficient traffic lights are discovering a hazardous downside: The bulbs don't burn hot enough to melt snow and can become crusted over in a storm — a problem blamed for dozens of accidents and at least one death.

"I've never had to put up with this in the past," said Duane Kassens, a driver from West Bend who got into a fender-bender recently because he couldn't see the lights. "The police officer told me the new lights weren't melting the snow. How is that safe?"

Well the Salt Lake Tribune did its all out best to out Strib the Strib today with this headline about the "Code Red Rally" in Salt Lake City.

Right-wing rally set for state Capitol

And just so the proper conspiratorial tone was not missed in the hyperbolic, hyperventilating headline, the author went on....

The state Capitol is expected to teem Tuesday with hundreds of red-dressed conservatives rallying to take back a government they believe has been hijacked, event organizers say.

Why Islam Sucks Part 300

You know, this is really getting old...

A SYDNEY couple has withdrawn their two children from a public primary school, claiming their 11-year-old son was bullied by Muslim students because he ate a salami sandwich during Ramadan. Andrew Grigoriou said yesterday he complained to the school and to police after his son Antonios was chased and later assaulted by Muslim students after a confrontation over the contents of his lunch, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Antonios, a Year 5 student of Greek-Australian background at Punchbowl Public School in Sydney's southwest, said he and a friend had to be locked inside the library for an hour after being chased by a group of Muslim boys offended by his choice of food while they were fasting. The Grigoriou family said the following exchange took place: Muslim student to Antonios: "Why are you eating ham, it's Ramadan?"

So a non-Muslim child can't eat the salami that his mother packed for him because it might offend a Muslim student?

Education By Murder

Five years ago today, Theo Van Gogh (of THAT Van Gogh family) was murdered by a radical Islamist for the crime of making a film critical of Islam.  Many people are taking the time to honor the film maker today, including the folks at Islam Watch who remind us that free speech is still under attack - just in a more subtle way.

...Islamists still answer free speech with violence. Two Chicago-area Muslims were charged last week with plotting attacks against those involved in publishing the Danish Muhammad cartoons. Shortly before that, Dutch MP Geert Wilders was welcomed to the UK by Islamist thugs who warned him — and everyone else — to "take lessons from people like Theo van Gogh," because "whoever insults the prophet, kill him."

Yet the greatest threat to free speech does not come from homegrown jihadists who wish to make examples of rabble-rousing Westerners. It arises from governments and related entities blinded by the fanciful notion that radicals will leave us alone if we only stop saying things that offend them. Some recent happenings:

When France Attacks...

Logical Lady Claudia Rosette is one of those women who never let her gender define her role in the world.  She is a foreign policy expert and journalist who has covered the UN Oil for Food scandal and the Tiananmen Square uprising, the war in Chechnya and the fall of the Soviet regime in Kabul.  She has written for publications from the Wall Street Journal to US Today and many other points in between.  She has reported from locals that would make most men blanch.

Yesterday - writing for Pajama's Media, Ms. Rosette talks about President Sarkozy's speech to the UN.

There’s plenty in French politics that the world could live without — thus, in 2003, when Jacques Chirac was president of France, Americans ended up ordering “Freedom Fries.” But the pendulum swings, and these days – credit France — we find French president Nicolas Sarkozy warning President Barack Obama that a foreign policy of denial and appeasement is the way to becoming French — and American — toast.  During the past week’s meetings at the United Nations, featuring Obama’s “mutual respect” and global tyrants on parade, there came a moment at which Sarkozy opened his mouth on the big, big subject of nuclear crisis, and spoke truth to Obamaland. It got far too little coverage — so I reprise it here...

They began with Obama’s pre-packaged deal of unanimously adopting a “historic” resolution, which Obama said “enshrines our shared commitment to the goal of a world without nuclear weapons,” etc, etc. etc (All very nice, but what does this have to do with the real world?). Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon kicked off the ensuing round of official self-congratulatory huffing and puffing (”…a historic moment…a fresh start towards a new future”). The canned diplo-speak continued, as each member spoke in turn – Costa Rica, Croatia, Russia, Spain, Austria, Vietnam, Uganda, China … and then it was the turn of the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. Here’s his wakeup call, in the UN’s translation from the French (boldface mine):

How Islam Makes Itself Look Totally Foolish

You just can't make this up.....

It is unlikely anyone has ever come to this city and commented on how clean the streets are. But this litter-strewn metropolis is now wrestling with a garbage problem so severe it has managed to incite its weary residents and command the attention of the president.
“The problem is clear in the streets,” said Haitham Kamal, a spokesman for the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs. “There is a strict and intensive effort now from the state to address this issue.”
But the crisis should not have come as a surprise. When the government killed all the pigs in Egypt this spring — in what public health experts said was a misguided attempt to combat swine flu — it was warned the city would be overwhelmed with trash.
The pigs used to eat tons of organic waste. Now the pigs are gone and the rotting food piles up on the streets of middle-class neighborhoods like Heliopolis and in the poor streets of communities like Imbaba.

Emphasis mine.  The reason that the Eqyptians decided that the pigs must die was because one of the Imam's declared swine flu was "proof" that the Koran was correct about pigs being unclean.

The global spread of the deadly swine flu virus affirms Islam's teachings and its holy book, the Koran, according to imam Amadia Rachid based in the Italian city of Salerno. "We believe that what is happening shows the truth of our faith," said Algerian-born Rachid in an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI).
Pigs are considered unclean animals in the Muslim and Jewish religions and eating pork is proscribed.

So because they are "unclean" by your religious standards, you have to kill then all - even if it makes your people sicker because of all of the garbage stacking up?  And they (the collective they) wonder why we (the collective we) think that they are a bunch of backwater, 3rd world, superstitious hicks?

As a parent, this story angers me more than I could possibly express (at least not in a PG-13 manner).....

A 12-year-old Yemeni girl, who was forced into marriage, died during a painful childbirth that also killed her baby, a children's rights group said Monday.

Fawziya Ammodi struggled for three days in labor, before dying of severe bleeding at a hospital on Friday, said the Seyaj Organization for the Protection of Children.

All The Fits That Is News To Print

This story, from today's Salt Lake Tribune, is a grand and glaring example of why (as commenter rmwarnick pointed out the yesterday) newspapers are losing out to blogs and other alternative media. Rather than commit the time to reporting on two different town hall meetings (Rep. Chaffetz on Wednesday and Rep. Bishop on Thursday), they combine both of the meetings into one half hearted report and based on the reporting it appears that the reporters only reported on other media representations of the meetings.  Case in point -

The meetings, just two among several the Republican representatives have held in the state during Congress' recess, didn't feature the kind of over-the-top rage that other members have encountered in their districts. Animosity in these gatherings mainly flared at the minority of attendees who dared speak in favor of President Barack Obama's health reform plan.

Emphasis mine.  Now I can not speak for what happened in Representative Bishop's town hall as I was not there, but I can speak about what happened Wednesday at Rep. Chaffetz's town hall since I was indeed there.  Those attendees who "dared speak in favor" of the President's bill did not garner the crowds ire because they supported the bill, it was because that the vast majority of those daring to speak, were interrupting others (most especially Representative Chaffetz), trying to shout them down and when that didn't work, resorting to profanity.

When I reported on the events of the night in my first post, I kept my "editorial" comments to a minimum and when I did resort to an aside, I marked it as such.  Not so the SLTrib who seems to think that editorializing in the news pages will sell more papers.  Just ask the Minneapolis Star Tribune how well that worked for them.  The more that the STrib editorialized in their news reporting, the more advertisers and readers flocked to their competition (the St. Paul Pioneer Press who never filed for bankruptcy) and the more readers and advertisers fled, the more the STrib started parroting the DFL's (Democrat Farmer Labor for my Utah friends) talking points, completing the circle until they got to the point that they had to SLASH staff in all areas including reporting!
Here's another grand and glaring example of editorializing the new....

Many in the audience tried to shout down Chuck McDowell, a Democrat from Riverton, when he took Chaffetz to task for his handling of the discredited claim that the president's health care bill creates "death panels" for seniors with medical issues.

Hard And Fast Rules

Tagged in: Untagged

Here at Anti-Strib, we have only one hard core standing rule for contributors and commenters alike - if you have a disagreement with someone politically it is fine to go after that person directly, but you leave the spouse and kids completely and totally OUT OF IT!  The quickest way to turn people off in any kind of an argument is to attack their momma, their wife or their kids.  The only people who have ever gotten their posting or commenting priviledges suspended here are people who have gone after someone elses family.

Apparently Casey Jones (editorial board member at the Salt Lake Tribune) should have thought about that prior to his publishing this column on classroom "overcrowding" in Utah schools (I'll address the content of said column in another post)...

Utahns take that "be fruitful and multiply" (or is it "multi-tithe"?) command very seriously. You'd think God himself was giving the order to get it on. The state's fertility rate -- 94.4 bundles of joy per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2007 -- is by far the highest in the nation.

When we Western imperialists/zionists are accused of engaging in atrocities against Islam, it is usually in response to something like this....

Urged on by calls from their mullahs, Muslim mobs burned down more than 50 homes of the Christian community in a village of the province of Punjab. A house of worship of the Anglican-affiliated Church of Pakistan, as well as another belonging to the New Apostolic Church, were both put to the torch in the evening hours of July 30 following a reaction to a supposed desecration of the Koran. Around 1000 Muslim believers, bearing firearms and explosives, also attacked numerous Christian homes and burned them. The village of Kolyat, where the attacks occured, is home to some 100 Christian families who had been living there for several decades. As the attacks widened, Christian men, women and children fled the onslaught and hid themselves in nearby fields. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers burnt everything belonging to the Christians, including clothes, food, utensils, beds, school books and Bibles in the houses. Even their animals were consumed by the blaze. There are reports that in some cases marauders stole some of Christians’ livestock as well.

The thing is that the alleged "desecration" was made up.

Hat tip to the Logical Husband for this gem.

Sudanese police fired tear gas and beat women protesting at the trial Tuesday of a female journalist who faces a flogging for wearing trousers in public.

Sudanese journalist Lubna Hussein could receive 40 lashes if found guilty of violating the country's indecency law which follows a strict interpretation of Islam. The 43-year-old says the law is un-Islamic and "oppressive," and she's trying to use her trial to rally support to change it.

...and it's predominant religion too (HT Michael Van Der Galien)...

In a shocking and unprecedented interview, directly exposing the inhumanity of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's religious regime in Iran, a serving member of the paramilitary Basiji militia has told this reporter of his role in suppressing opposition street protests in recent weeks. He has also detailed aspects of his earlier service in the force, including his enforced participation in the rape of young Iranian girls prior to their execution.

While much of the interview talks about the Basiji crack down on the pro-freedom demonstrators after the recent elections, it is the talk of his own career that cause the greatest revulsion.
